Why can't I say "Elfs"? If there are "dark elves", does that mean there are "light" elves? Why the heck is this all so confusing? We can post information here regarding the elves, their history, culture, and other information . . .

Names of Origin:
Elves (not Elfs), as oppsed to men being the "Second People", were the Firstborn race of Eru Iluvatar, or "First Ones". When they woke up, there was no sun. No Moon. Only the stars. The Vala Orome (Basically, Orome is the "strongest" though not most important of the Valar. He's referred to as "the hunter") thus called them the "Eldar" or star people. In Tolkiens writings you will see a preoccupation of the elves with the stars. It harkens back to their genesis, when everything was new for them.
Since they were the only things that could speak, they named themselves, their kind "Quendi" which means "The Speakers". They taught the Ents to "wake up" to speech in their wanderings about Middle Earth.
