Everything, everything that happens in LOTR, is because of A) Feanor the elf B) The Silmarills, C) The Two Trees of Valinor.
Everything, relates back to that in some way. When Tom Bombadil has that sad look on his face in the books, reflecting on the past, I have no doubt he's reflecting on what happened during that time period.
The long and the short of it is - Every single time - Saurons "boss" Morgoth won. That is why they call the High Elves (Calequendi) who still live in Middle Earth members of the "long defeat".

Don't forget to add the Highlander, the events of that series had alot to do with alot of things. I am living proof of that!!

yep, because in the silmarillion ( /spell check) it refers to suaron as a lieutenant. and for the people who haven't read it yet. you'll be shocked to learn that sauron lived in Numenor( /spell check) for a time. (teaser )
