With anticipation of the game, I decided over the holiday break to finally read the Silmarillion (it is Silmarillion, right? .. /points to board title I did find it initially a bit daunting with it being almost entirely narrative and exposition-- it's very dense. I found it easier to think of each chapter as a short story to read and then take a break to absorb. I really liked many of the stories: How the Dwarfs and Ents were first created. Yavanna and the two trees. Melkor and the Silmarils. The burning of the ships. Beren and Luthien with Huan fighting Sauron. The entire Turin story. It also really set the context for what happens in the LOTR. Which, from what I remember, never really addressed why Sauron is so powerful, who Gandalf and Saruman are and why they are so unique, etc. I would really recommend reading it if you have not already.
